Timex Expedition WS4
If you love exploring the outdoors or are a fan of compact gadgetry, you will want to check out the Timex Expedition WS4 watch. Its durable design and nearly bottomless set of features makes it ideal for any outdoor conditions you can imagine. In many ways having a WS4 is like having a weather station and a powerful navigational system strapped directly on your wrist.
Every outdoorsmen knows the importance of keeping an eye on the weather. An unexpected storm or sudden drop in temperature could not just be uncomfortable, but even life-threatening. The WS4 will not only tell you at a glance the air temperature, water temperature and barometric pressure, but it will actually forecast weather for the upcoming 12-24 hours. American rock climber and mountaineer, Conrad Anker, tested the Expedition WS4 at over 20,000 feet in the Himalayans recently. He attributes the watches weather forecasting tools with forewarning him of an impending storm, so that he and his team avoided the bulk of it.
The WS4 is also loaded with navigational aids. The altimeter features minimum and maximum recall and allows you to quickly check changes in your elevation. The digital compass includes an adjustable declination angle to insure further accuracy. Conrad Anker actually used the compass to align their satellite phone transmitter with satellite orbits. He described the WS4’s performance in this task as ‘flawless.’
Other features of the WS4 include a 100 hour countdown timer, stopwatch, and indiglo night light. The watches 50 mm compostite case, with stainless steel top ring renders it almost impervious to the most extreme conditions including snow, smoke, dust, mud, rain and rigorous physical use.
With all of this functionality you might be concerned that it would be difficult to operate. However, the dashboard interface is extremely intuitive making it easy to use the moment you pull it out of the box. Within moments a new user can readily put it to work confidently on the trail. If you have been a Timex user in the past many of buttons will be quite familiar.
You might also expect a watch so loaded with function to lack style. Initially, when the WS4 was released in 2009 buyers were limited to a rubber wrist strap with 3 base colors: black, blue, and yellow. Now Velcro and integrated durable rubber wrist bands are both available. An extra large elastic strap can be worn directly on the wrist or readily expand to accommodate wearing the watch over large gear, such as a ski jacket.
You can even go band-less with a new carbiner design that allows you to clip the WS4 to nearly any piece of gear. The color range has also been expanded to six different choices. The aesthetically unique watch face design coupled with the variety of colors and band styles has even made the watch appealing to non-outdoorsmen.
So, whether you are a hunter, fishermen, camper, extreme expeditionist or even just an urbanite who loves gadgetry and unique design the Timex Expedition WS4 is sure to not disappoint you. In fact, it will likely exceed your expectations.
